Carrie Soundtrack (1976)
Brian De Palma’s 1976 film “Carrie” is based on the debut novel by Stephen King. The film’s story of a young girl with telekinetic powers who gets the ultimate revenge on her tormentors is the stuff of horror legend. But what really makes the film stand out, aside from Sissy Spacek’s eerily perfect portrayal of the titular character, is its haunting soundtrack.
Enter Pino Donaggio, the maestro behind the “Carrie” soundtrack. An Italian composer who started his career as a pop singer, Donaggio transitioned to film scoring in the early 70s. His collaboration with Brian De Palma on “Carrie” was a match made in horror heaven.
The pair worked so well together that they collaborated on several other films, including “Dressed to Kill” and “Blow Out.” Donaggio’s unique style, which often blends classical orchestration with modern sounds, made him a perfect fit for the unsettling world of Carrie.
